Executive summary
The 50 are younger, smaller and cheaper to enter than the wider Index.
Across the full Index, the median publicly recorded franchise network size is 60 franchisees. Among the selected 50 it is 5. The median franchising start year among selected networks with a recorded year is 2024, compared with 2010 across the wider Index.
A minimum investment figure is published for 36 of the 50 selected networks, with a median of £15,000. Read the same way across the full Index, the median is £20,000 across 445 networks.
The strongest average Fibre within the selected cohort is Build at 16.01 out of 20. Grow is the lowest at 11.60. That creates a 4.41 point gap between building the franchise system and evidencing a repeatable commercial growth engine.
Why this report exists
Every established franchise network was once a small franchise network.
Franchise coverage naturally gravitates towards the names people already know. This report looks earlier. It identifies 50 smaller, newer or less widely recognised UK franchise networks whose current development gives the industry something specific to follow.
This is not a ranking. It is not a list of the best franchises to buy. It does not predict which networks will succeed. Selection means worth watching, based on public evidence available within the UK Franchise Growth Index and the research supporting it.
No network can pay to appear. No application is required. A commercial relationship with Twine Growth is not required and provides no preference. One selected network, Memory Catcher, is connected to Twine Growth, and its profile carries a disclosure. The final 50 are presented alphabetically within this report, not from first to fiftieth.
Key findings
42 of the 50 selected networks began franchising from 2022 onwards, based on publicly recorded start years.
Among the 36 selected networks with a published minimum investment, the median minimum investment is £15,000.
26 of the 50 have fewer than 10 publicly recorded franchisees.
The selected 50 average 16.01 out of 20 for Build, the strongest average Fibre in the cohort.
The selected 50 average 11.60 out of 20 for Grow, the lowest average Fibre in the cohort.
The average overall Five Fibre score across the selected 50 is 73.13 out of 100, compared with 75.49 across all 817 networks in the Index.
More findings from the report
- 817Twine Growth considered all 817 franchise networks in the UK Franchise Growth Index before selecting the final 50.
- 176The emerging candidate pool contained 176 networks after applying stage, scale and active development criteria.
- 47 of 5047 of the 50 began franchising from 2017 onwards, based on publicly recorded start years.
- 30 of 5030 of the 50 have fewer than 25 publicly recorded franchisees.
Every finding is from Twine Growth’s analysis of the UK Franchise Growth Index. The base for each figure is stated in the finding itself.
How the 50 were selected
A six stage selection process, not a popularity list.
- 01Identify networks in the Index that are newer to franchising or remain relatively small, while showing active franchise development.
- 02Analyse each eligible network using franchise age, recorded network size, recruitment status, investment, operating model and Five Fibre evidence.
- 03Create an internal evidence score to make the longlisting process consistent. This internal score is not published as a league table.
- 04Create a researched longlist of 100 networks and sense check the evidence already recorded against the public sources captured in the Index.
- 05Apply an editorial sense check so one heavily represented sector does not crowd out equally relevant emerging networks elsewhere.
- 06Select 50 networks and present them without ranking.
Eligibility is evidence led. The selection gives priority to networks that began franchising relatively recently, remain comparatively small, or combine both characteristics. Established household names are not included simply because their infrastructure is strong.
The emerging landscape
176 networks form the emerging candidate pool.
The candidate pool contains 176 networks. Its median recorded network size is 18 franchisees and its median franchising start year is 2021. This is the population used to look beyond established names and focus attention on networks still building their franchise footprint.
The public data is uneven. Some networks publish exact franchisee counts and investment figures. Others disclose only ranges or no figure at all. Missing information is treated as missing, not estimated.
Sector picture
The selected cohort spans 18 industry classifications.
Food and Drink and Childcare and Children’s Activities are the most represented industries in the final cohort, with ten networks each. The remaining 30 selections span 16 other industry classifications, giving the report a wider view of emerging franchise development.
Five Fibre profile
Build is strongest. Grow remains the clearest evidence gap.
The selected 50 average 15.80 for Assess, 16.01 for Build, 15.42 for Launch, 11.60 for Grow and 14.23 for Amplify. The wider Index averages 16.52, 16.53, 15.46, 12.30 and 14.57 respectively.
The selected cohort does not simply score higher than the market. Its average overall score is 73.13 compared with 75.49 across all 817 networks in the Index. That is intentional. This report is looking for developing networks with evidence worth following, not mature networks with the highest total scores.
What surprised us
Early stage does not automatically mean weak foundations.
Newer dominates the cohort
42 of the 50 selected networks began franchising from 2022 onwards, where a start year is publicly recorded.
Small really does mean small
26 of the 50 have fewer than 10 publicly recorded franchisees. 30 have fewer than 25.
Build leads the Five Fibres
Build averages 16.01, the highest Fibre across the cohort. This suggests that many selected networks are putting visible systems and operating foundations in place early.
Grow is the visible gap
Grow averages 11.60, which is 4.41 points below Build. Public evidence of repeatable franchise recruitment remains less developed than the operating foundations.
Lower entry cost is common
Among the 36 selected networks with a published minimum investment, the median is £15,000, below the full Index median of £20,000 on the same reading.
The cohort is not a high score club
The average overall Five Fibre score is 73.13. Selection is driven by stage, scale and evidence, not by simply taking the 50 highest scores.

Patterns across the 50
What the cohort tells us about early franchise development
The selected cohort is materially younger than the wider Index. Its median franchising start year is 2024, compared with 2010 across all networks with a usable year. Its median recorded franchisee count is 5, compared with 60 across the wider Index.
Against the remaining emerging peer cohort, the selected 50 average 73.13 overall compared with 72.81. The difference is modest. More revealing is the stage profile: the selected group is newer, smaller and slightly stronger on Launch and Amplify, while Grow remains the lowest average Fibre.
The Build to Grow gap is 4.41 points within the selected 50. This does not prove a causal growth problem. It shows that public evidence of systems and operations is currently stronger than public evidence of a measurable, repeatable franchise recruitment engine.
Methodology
What the report measures, and what it does not
Research population
All 817 franchise networks in the UK Franchise Growth Index were considered.
Assessment date
The underlying Index records assessments current to 22 September 2026.
Network age
Franchise age uses the publicly recorded Franchising Started field. Company founding date is not substituted when the franchise start year is unavailable.
Network size
Network size uses the Approx Franchisees field where a usable numeric value can be extracted. Approximate public figures remain approximate.
Missing information
Missing public information is left missing. The report does not estimate investment, franchisee counts or start dates where the Index does not support them.
Five Fibre Framework
Assess covers readiness, positioning and market fit. Build covers systems, brand and operations. Launch covers testing, onboarding and support. Grow covers commercial growth, lead quality and conversion. Amplify covers local marketing and support for franchisee growth.
Selection
The internal selection model considers relative maturity, relative scale, Five Fibre balance, overall public evidence and active franchise development. It supports consistency but is not published as a ranking.
Editorial sense check
The final cohort is reviewed to avoid allowing one heavily represented sector to dominate the report. This is an editorial balance step, not a quota system.
No endorsement
Inclusion does not mean Twine Growth recommends buying the franchise, has audited its franchise agreement, or guarantees future commercial performance.
No paid placement
No franchise network can pay for inclusion. A Twine Growth relationship is not required and does not alter selection. Memory Catcher is connected to Twine Growth and its profile carries a disclosure.
Records and figures
Minimum investment: a profile shows the minimum investment recorded in the Index, including figures written with a £ sign or a note such as “plus VAT”. Black Sheep Coffee’s entry is a liquid asset requirement, not an investment figure, so it is left out of the cohort median.
This report uses the shared Index methodology, set out in full in how the UK Franchise Growth Index was created, plus the report-specific method above.
